Salah satu orang hebat di dunia yang saya kagumi adalah Helen Keller, seorang perempuan yang tidak dapat melihat maupun mendengar namun dengan kegigihannya menjadikan Helen Keller seorang penulis terkenal, pejuang hak-hak perempuan dan juga seorang guru.

Hellen Keller lahir pada 27 Juni 1880 di Alabama, Amerika serikat. Ayahnya seorang editor surat kabar dan merupakan orang yang berpengaruh dilingkungannya.

Sebenarnya Helen Keller terlahir sebagai anak yang sehat, namun pada saat usia 19 bulan menderita sakit yang  membuat ia menderita tuli dan buta sebelum ia mengetahui cara membaca dan menulis. Karena penyakitnya sejalan bersama pertumbuhannya, ia menjadi anak yang liar dan tidak patuh serta tidak mengenal dengan jelas dunia yang ada disekelilingnya.

Ketika berumur 7 tahun, ayahnya mendatangkan seorang guru yaitu Anne Sulivan, seorang perempuan berumur 20-an lulusan Sekolah khusus orang buta karena sebelumnya ia juga buta dan mendapatkan penglihatannya kembali melalui serangkaian operasi.

Sewaktu ia mengecap pendidikan, ia belajar menguasai alphabet dengan cepat, baik manual maupun huruf timbul khusus bagi orang buta serta meningkatkan kemampuan membaca dan menulis. Ketika umurnya masih 10 tahun, ia mencoba untuk belajar berbicara.

Sejak ia masih kecil, ia selalu berkata suatu hari saya akan masuk perguruan tinggi dan akhirnya ia membuktikannya masuk ke Radcliffe College dan menamatkan sekolahnya dengan prestasi Cumlaude.

Pendidikan formalnya berakhir sewaktu ia menerima gelar Sarjana Muda, namun selama hidupnya ia selalu belajar secara informal hal-hal yang penting bagi masyarakat moderen. Dengan pengetahuannya yang luas serta banyaknya pencapaian dibidang pendidikan, ia dianugerahkan gelar doktor kehormatan dari beberapan universitas di dunia.

Helen Keller adalah wanita tegar yang menjadi inspirasi bagi dunia, ia bisa membuktikan bahwa keterbatasan fisik tidak bisa mengekang manusia untuk sukses, selama ada keyakinan diri, kerja keras dan semangat.
